Introduction: ABC Music Challenge

Hi all!! For October 2016, I’m going to do an ABC Music Challenge. It’s pretty self-explanatory but I would like to thank Jamie from ‘My Soulmate: Music‘ for indirectly introducing me to this challenge. 😀

For each letter, I’ll to have at least of these 3 different types of music:

  1. Contemporary (This probably won’t be in just English. I like J-Pop, K-Pop, Mandopop and Cantopop. Sometimes, I listen to Spanish, French, German and Arabic singers as well. Most of the songs in this section should be released between 1950 – present day.)
  2. Soundtrack or Instrumental (Generally, this section shouldn’t have lyrics. Any soundtracks with lyrics will probably in the Contemporary section. By the way, I watch anime (sometimes) so don’t be too surprised if something weird comes up. I also like contemporary classical pieces, which I feel don’t go under ‘classical’ so they’re going to be here. 😛 )
  3. ‘Classical’ (Most people refer to anything before the 20th-century rock and pop as ‘classical’ but music fanatics like me will know that there’s the Baroque period (c1600 – c1750), the Classical period (c1750 – c1830), the Romantic period (c1830 – c1900). For no. 3, I will be recommending music from all 3 of these periods.)

If I don’t have a song for more than one category, I’m going to recommend just 3 songs. That sounds reasonable, right?

Actually, I might have an ‘Others’ section as well, just in case something doesn’t fit into one of those categories. I’ll have a ‘Notable Mentions’ as well, which consists of songs which I don’t particularly like but don’t particularly hate either. If you don’t like my main recommendations, you should give these a try.

Currently listening to: Feathers Across the Seasons – Kagamine Rin and Len

Yuri!!! on Ice – First Impressions

Recently, I’ve been busy studying for my mock exams in January but here’s the thing… I was bored this morning so I was like, let’s watch some anime!! You can kind of see where this is headed… It was supposed to be an enjoyable and relaxing morning… I woke up at 10:31 am and had breakfast brunch at 11am so I decided to spend the next hour or two watching a really nice anime. As usual, I went onto kissanime.to and immediately scrolled to the ‘New and Hot’ section on their home page. This is what I see…

Screen Shot 2016-12-02 at 2.31.41 PM.png

1. Haikyuu!!

Meh… I don’t particularly want to watch 8 episodes of Haikyuu!! Third Season only to then have to wait another 3 months for the rest of the season so I’m not going to watch it…

2. Yuri!!! on Ice

Ooooooooooooh… New sports anime… Yay!! And… it’s about figure skating!! Did I ever mention that I have this weird obsession with watching figure skating ever since I saw Hanyu Yuzuru skate last year? So without thinking, I click on this link. Only then do I see that only 9 episodes have been released… But even then, I’m like… meh…

So the link takes me to this page…

Screen Shot 2016-12-02 at 2.40.36 PM.png

And like any good anime fan (or any sane person), I read the description… Okay… it doesn’t sound terrible so let’s give it a try… ヽ( ´¬`)ノ

And Episode 1 starts… with Japanese Yuri talking about Victor (or is it Viktor?) … then the theme song, which, by the way, I’m absolutely in love with… (´∀`)♡

Can you hear my heart beat?

Tired of feeling never enough

Anyway, Episode 1 was OK in general… if a little slow… I thought it would be really upbeat and cheerful but then it gets a little dark when Russian Yuri appears. I mean, that electric music and ‘Russian Punk’, really? ‘We don’t need 2 Yuris’ OMG! It’s kinda cliché.

Episode 1: Reasonably good by my standards (which are really low) but a little slow… What’s with Yuri’s (Japanese) indecisiveness? Somehow, I feel like the story only starts at the end of this episode, which is kinda annoying.

Episode 2: Cuteeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!! I mean, who wouldn’t love this screenshot of Victor and Yuri??pkr3qlcrCurrently, I’m enjoying this anime and I look forward to the rest of it. Hope you guys like it as much as I do… 😛

Letter ‘S’ || ABC Music Challenge

Sorry that this took so long to be published, but I was feeling pretty lazy, and school had exams, so yeah. *awkward laughing*

Contemporary

Skinny Love – Birdy

This is possibly on of my favourite songs. I don’t remember when I first heard this song, but it’s amazing, since I can also ‘cover’ it with my voice (//v//) and the piano! LOL XD

Sing For You – EXO

This is soooo angsty. Like, seriously. I only recently heard this song (about last month?) but I loved it instantly, and It’s seriously so amazing. I literally cried listening to this song, since it’s really emotional. And if you’re an EXO-L, there are so many hints to the three members leaving, that I just can’t. *starts crying*

Soundtrack/Instrumental

Summer – Joe Hisaishi

This is from the movie, Kikujiro, which is STILL on my to-watch list. I don’t know if the movie is good, but the song is pretty darn amazing. I don’t know what to say really, just listen to the song, and watch the movie (I really need to watch the movie soon XD)

Baroque/Classical/Romantic

Spring (Four Seasons) – Antonio Vivaldi

I think I first found this song on Piano Tiles 2 (Don’t ask me, I was pretty obsessed). It’s pretty nice, and I really like pretend dancing to it. There’s just one problem. It’s actually called Four Seasons – Spring (or La Primavera), but I’m taking the easy way out. XD XD

Notable Mentions

  • Sleeping Beauty Waltz – Pyotr Illich Tchaikovsky
  • Swan Lake Waltz – Pyotr Illich Tchaikovsky
  • The Sixth Stop – Joe Hisaishi

Letter ‘R’ || ABC Music Challenge

Contemporary

Royals – Lorde

I first heard ‘Royals’ on the radio and it was one of the best songs I heard at the time. I think this was one of the first ‘modern’ songs I liked because I had an anti-radio phase roughly 5 years ago. So yes, this song has meaning for me.

Run – EXO

No thanks to Sami, I think I’m addicted to EXO songs, such as Growl, Overdose, Mama and more… (#^.^#)
But… I like this one. It’s more uplifting compared to others like Growl, Overdose and Lotto. I think this one makes EXO more on par with Western ‘boy’ bands such as The Vamps and One Direction. I’m not sure if that’ll be correct though… (^_^’)

Reality – Lost Frequencies (feat. Janieck Devy)

I really like this song! I was really into it last year. I used to sing it EVERYWHERE!! I like it because it’s relaxing but it’s somehow motivational for me. Weird, isn’t it? Anyways, I think of older people and their lives when I hear this song. What do you think of when you hear it?

Soundtrack/Instrumental

Reminiscence – Satoshi Takebe (From Up on Poppy Hill)

Ah… Memories… You should watch the movie if you haven’t already… It’s worth your time (in my opinion). If you don’t believe me, you might want to find others’ opinions online but it’s pretty good. At least, acknowledge the soundtrack if you don’t want to watch the movie.

Reprise (AKA Again) – Joe Hisaishi (Spirited Away)

Now, this stirs emotions. I first watched the movie way back and only recently watched it again. It does have one of the best soundtracks I’ve ever heard and I think it’ll be worth your time to watch the movie and listen to the soundtrack because soundtracks are MADE to accompany a movie, after all… But of course, they are beautiful on their own. Still, the best way to listen to a soundtrack is to watch the movie it accompanies (in my opinion)

Baroque/Classical/Romantic

Rondo alla Turca (AKA Turkish March) – Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

This is easily one of my favourite Mozart pieces. I can’t play it well at all but it is something I hope to play in the future (along with Chopin’s Études Op. 10 and Op. 25 ^^ ) I hope you like this piece as well because it’s really nice to listen to (I think I use that phrase too much) and I like the mix of major and minor (#^.^#)

Notable Mentions

  • Red Lights – Tiësto
  • The Real Slim Shady – Eminem
  • Rolling in the Deep – Adele
  • Ryuusei – TiA
  • Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso – Camille Saint-Saëns (I’m not sure if this piece would fit into this letter… )

Letter ‘Q’ || ABC Music Challenge

For letter Q, I’m going to apologise PROFUSELY!! (シ_ _)シ
This is because I was only able to find 2 songs beginning with this letter, thanks to Ludovico Einaudi and Justice Crew. But… I don’t like either of these songs… (T_T)

Questa Notte – Ludovico Einaudi

This one is from Islands (as usual) and it’s relaxing… I guess. I’ve never tried playing this one on piano but it reminds me of those epics when the hero is just setting out on a journey. When I hear this, I can imagine the hero walking over a vast landscape. Don’t judge!! It’s just what I hear… What do you hear when you listen to this?

Que Sera – Justice Crew

I first heard this song on Apple Radio (or whatever it’s called) AGES ago, before we had to start paying for it. I’ve always thought it’s fun and it’s something I listen to… (never, but that’s mainly because I didn’t download it on to my iTunes library. (^_-)

And I think that’s it! Also, I’d like to apologise for this late post… (シ_ _)シ
This is because my cousins came over and I haven’t had time to write anything because they’re still young and it’s kind of annoying trying to do anything when they’re giggling all the time. (I don’t think that’s a good excuse but it’s the truth…)

Letter ‘P’ || ABC Music Challenge

Contemporary

Paradise – Coldplay

This is my FAVOURITE ColdPlay song ever. Coldplay has such a unique style of music that’s like a combination of types of music (I dunno, it sounds like that to me…). If memory serves, this was the very first Coldplay song that I ever heard, and it made me into a Coldplay fan (I’m not anymore, I progressed onto EXO)

Soundtrack/Instrumental

Path of the Wind – Joe Hisaishi

This is from my childhood favourite film, My Neighbour Totoro. I love it soooooooo much, that words can’t even describe just how much I love the film. If you’ve never even heard of it, I don’t know what rock you’ve been living under but it’s a pretty big rock (and a pretty bad place to live.)

Baroque/Classical/Romantic

Pastorale – Johann Friedrich Franz Bürgmuller

This is one of the very few songs that I can actually play on the piano! 😉 But then again, this song is rather short, if you play it quickly without the repeats, so… *Starts laughing nervously*

Notable Mentions

  • Perfect – P!nk
  • Poker Face – Lady Gaga
  • Purpose – Justin Bieber
  • Peter Pan – EXO

Letter ‘O’ || ABC Music Challenge

Contemporary

Overdose – EXO

Haha *Laughs nervously* Why do I do this to my blog? *Laughs nervously again* Why am I so obsessed? *Starts crying while laughing nervously.* Anyways, I love this song, it’s amazing and great to karaoke, even if I have no clue what the lyrics are, but for me, it marks this big change in EXO, where some of the members started leaving. 😥

Orange (Orenji) – 7!!

Haha *Continues to laugh nervously* For those of you who watch YLiA (Your Lie in April), you SHOULD know this song. And, unfortunately, the official video for the song (The one above) only plays half of the song. :(. This song, in my opinion, is the BEST EVER. ❤ ❤

Soundtrack/Instrumental

On A Clear Day – Joe Hisaishi

This is from one of my favourite (All of them are my favourites) Studio Ghibli film, Kiki’s Delivery Service. This is, still in my opinion, the best song, in the soundtrack, and it’s also really good for yoga, and revising.

Baroque/Classical/Romantic

Ode an die Freude (Ode to Joy) – Ludwig van Beethoven

We all know this song. If you learnt to play the piano, you’ve probably played the EXTREMELY simplified version of this. I found this amazing video on youtube, where this girl puts one coin into the hat, and then this whole orchestra forms, it’s amazing, I can’t find the same video, but if you find it please watch it!

Notable Mentions

  • Only Girl (in the World) – Rihanna
  • One Call Away – Charlie Puth
  • One Summer’s Day – Joe Hisaishi

Contemporary

New Romantics – Taylor Swift

This is one of those I-heard-it-on-the-radio-and-liked-it-somewhat kind of songs. It’s OK but honestly, it’s not a particular favourite so I won’t be too offended if you don’t like it because not everyone is a fan of Taylor Swift.

The Nights – Avicii

I like Avicii-ish… but sometimes, I really love his songs. This is one of those that I-also-heard-on-the-radio-and-liked, kinda like ‘New Romantics’. Still, it’s good for parties!!

Soundtrack/Instrumental

Nuvole bianche – Ludovico Einaudi

More Einaudi!! This is one of my favourites though… I absolutely ADORE this song!! It’s true! I play it almost every time I play the piano (although to be completely honest… I can’t really play it well 😛 )

Naruto and Hinata – Yasuharu Takanashi (from The Last: Naruto the Movie)

I watched Naruto the Last a few years ago and I became addicted to this soundtrack!! It’s nothing special, of course, but for anime lovers (especially for Naruto lovers) I recommend this completely!!

Baroque/Classical/Romantic

Nocturne Op. 9 No. 2 – Frédéric Chopin

I told you that I like Chopin, right?? Actually, that’s wrong… I don’t like Chopin, I ❤ him 2 pieces!! (‘∀’●)♡ So for anyone who says that "he’s not actually that great”, I will respect your opinion but just know that I don’t agree!! @(o・ェ・)@

Notable Mentions

  • Nothin’ on You – B.o.B (feat. Bruno Mars)
  • Night Changes – One Direction
  • Nightbook – Ludovico Einaudi
  • Never Forget You – MNEK & Zara Larsson
  • Neon Lights – Demi Lovato

Letter ‘M’ || ABC Music Challenge

Contemporary

Misty Road – Ben

Recently, I started watching a Korean TV drama called Moonlight Drawn by Clouds but it’s also known as Love in the Moonlight. It’s based off a web-novel and is set in ‘Ancient Korea’ (I don’t know the term, is it Joseon?) Anyways, this is one of the soundtrack pieces and honestly, I love it!! If you have time (or you’re into Kdramas) I suggest watching this because it’s one of the top dramas in Korea right now but the whole thing hasn’t been released yet. Still, I don’t think you’ll regret it. *fingers crossed* ( ^∇^)

Mama – EXO

Like @Sami, I am (somewhat) a fan of EXO but not really, I think… Anyways, this song is GREAT!! I’m addicted to it so much that I can’t get out of my head. But the thing is, this MV is a little weird in that there’s this narration thing-y at the front and it really annoys me… V(=^・ω・^=)v Damn, now I feel really guilty for recommending 2 K-Pop songs.

Soundtrack/Instrumental

Monday – Ludovico Einaudi

Remember my bae Einaudi?? He’s back again… Mainly because I’m no good at finding songs for this section. V(=^・ω・^=)v Hope you don’t mind because it’s relaxing… Looks like I’ll have to find another one!! (^_-)Oh, and I hope this video works for you because YouTube might remove it because it’s not an official version. I hope they don’t though…

Mei is Missing

As we all know, My Neighbour Totoro is one of my favourite anime movies of all time so it comes as no surprise that its soundtrack is one of my favourites. This is an orchestra cover (according to the uploader) but I have no idea which one so I hope you like it… ヾ(@† ▽ †@)ノ

Baroque/Classical/Romantic

Marche Funèbre, Op. 72 No. 2 – Frédéric Chopin

This is one of THE most depressing songs I ever listen to. Actually, it’s depressing to the point that it’s actually comical rather than sad so whenever I’m sad, I like to listen to this song and it makes me laugh because it isn’t actually ‘sad’ sad but rather ‘comical depressing’ sad. Anyways, it’s just my opinion but I think I’m wrong because it’s a ‘funeral march’ so it’s supposed to be depressing. Actually, what counts as depressing?? Maybe I should write a post on ‘depressing things’. Regardless, people have different interpretations of music, especially ‘classical’ pieces like these. I’d like to listen to some of your interpretations so tell me what you think!!

Notable Mentions

  • Miracles in December – EXO
  • Message of Rouge – Yumi Arai (Kiki’s Delivery Service)
  • Maps – Maroon 5
  • My Truth – ENA (Your lie in April)
  • Mine – Taylor Swift
  • Marvin Gaye – Charlie Puth (feat. Meghan Trainor)

Lotto – EXO

*Fangirl Screams* I’ll be honest. At first, I didn’t like this song (I don’t know what was wrong with me) but I listened to it more, and I liked it! You have to listen to this song, more than ten times before you officially fall in love AND the music video is amazing, go watch it.

LUV – APink

Besides for EXO and Davichi songs, this is the one that’s mostly stuck in my head. APink has a really amazing song style, and most of their songs are my TYPE of song, if you understand what I mean. I know that I probably sound crazy right now but please just ignore me, and listen to the song, I mean, that’s why you’re here, right?

Soundtrack/Instrumental

Luminous Sword – Yuki Kajiura

This is from the great and amazing anime, Sword Art Online (A.K.A. SAO). I love this song, and I can say the same for the anime, only the first season though, I haven’t watched the second season yet, so I can’t say anything.

Baroque/Classical/Romantic

Liebesleid – Fritz Kreisler

For those of you who watch YLiA (Your Lie in April),  you should all know this song! This is now my personal favourite, and it made me want to play the violin. Unfortunately, I still can’t play the Rachmaninoff Arrangement. 😦 . Technically, this song doesn’t go under Baroque/Classical/Romantic, but it’s pretty close, and I’m too lazy to find another one, school has started again.

Notable Mentions

  • Let Me Love You – Justin Bieber
  • Liebesfreud –  Fritz Kreisler
  • Lucky One – EXO
  • Lucky – EXO
  • Love Me Right – EXO

Kirameki – Wacci

You guys should all know that I watch Your Lie in April. It’s probably one of the best animes in the entire world, not to mention that it’s the most emotional anime ever. This is the first ending (If I’m not mistaken) of the anime, and I LOVE it! (But I love all of the songs) 😀

Soundtrack/Instrumental

Kimi wa Wasurerareru no –

Once again, another Your Lie in April song comes up. Reader, Why are you not surprised? OH, because a Your Lie in April song ALREADY came up *laughs nervously*. Anyway, I live for this song, it’s one of the amazing songs part of the YLiA OSTs, but I never listen to it, ’cause I can’t spell the name *laughs again.*

Baroque/Classical/Romantic

Kreutzer Sonata – Ludwig van Beethoven

I’m so glad that my personal search engine (namely, My sister) found this song, or I wouldn’t have had any song for the Baroque/Classical/Romantic section. For those of you who have watched YLiA (See Soundtrack/Instrumental section for reference), you MAY recognise this piece. *More nervous laughter*

Notable Mentions

  • King – Years & Years
  • Kill ’em with Kindness – Selena Gomez
  • Korobeiniki – Alexandrov Ensemble
